Unique Wedding Centerpieces

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I just got back from a wonderful wedding this weekend. Our friends Shawn and Melissa got married and their wedding was beautiful and full of thoughtful details. One of my favorite things were their centerpieces which were gorgeous and unique.  I of course, forgot to take photos but it inspired me to find some really fun and beautiful centerpieces ideas online.

Something Blue

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

When I was getting married last year, I wondered where the custom of “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” came from? After doing a little research I found out that it derives from this old saying:

Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe

This tradition is meant to bring the bride good luck. If you’re still looking for that ’something blue’ I found some items on the site that might inspire you. Click on the image to view the full listing.

A Tribute to my Dad

My whole life I looked up to my Dad, he was the smartest, funniest and most loving man I knew. Not only was he a great Father but I knew he was a wonderful husband too. My parents have been married for 35 years and are still happy and very much in love. When I was growing up I knew I’d never get married until I found someone who was as special as my Dad. Finally I met my husband Mark, (who is pretty darn special). In my wedding speech I wanted to use a line from Ethel Kennedy, who said to her new husband, “All my life I have searched for someone like my Father, and you came the closest”.

So thank you Dad, for teaching me about love and life and for always being there. Happy Father’s Day!

Groom’s Guide to Renting a Limo

Guys love cars so it should come as no surprise that planning wedding day transportation is a favorite wedding duty of grooms.

Whether it’s a stretch limo or even a classic Bentley or Rolls Royce, grooms are getting more creative with riding in style on the big day. Here are a few tips on making sure the booking process goes as smooth as possible:

  • Plan ahead – Know how many people will be riding along and compare that with how many can legally ride in the limo. You’ll also need to tell the limo service how far you’ll be going and the scheduled arrival/departure times.
  • Research your ride – Take special care to research all of the different styles/models of limos that are offered. You’re only getting married once (hopefully), so get it right! If you’re feeling generous, ask your fiancé for input.
  • Get an estimate – Get a copy of the quoted estimate. You should have planned out a wedding budget, so you’ll need to know what you’ll be charged for the rental, mileage, and gratuity.
  • Reserve early – Limos book up fast (especially in the busy spring wedding season). We recommend booking a minimum of three months in advance.
  • Take note of safety issues – Confirm that the limo service you’re using is insured and abides by all state/national laws for car services. It’s smart to get a copy of their insurance and liability info as well.
  • Add a special touch – If you’re planning on having the limo arrive with drinks or flowers already in it, talk to the limo company about any specials they offer or how you can get them the items in advance to the wedding day.

Thanks to Chris Easter from The Man Registry for this great limo advice!

Nontraditional wedding bouquets!

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

I absolutely love fresh flowers, there’s nothing like them but I came across this gorgeous bouquet made entirely of seashells (pictured below) and I had to share it.  It inspired me to look for other nontraditional bouquets that you could use not only on your wedding day but for years to come!

Love this easy and creative wedding decor!

I have a friend who used stencils at their wedding (photo below) so when guest walked into the reception it thanked them for coming. Not only did it look beautiful, it also added such a nice, elegant and meaningful touch. Jennifer, from The Simple Stencil emailed me and that’s exactly what their company does. Her website allows you to completely customize your stencil quote and design it in your wedding colors. Best of all they are easy to apply and remove! I included a few of my favorites.

I stumbled across these wedding statistics and thought they were pretty interesting. Enjoy!

  • 2,190,363 couples were wed in the U.S. in 2008.
  • The world’s longest-married living couple, Zelmyra & Herbert Fisher of  North Carolina, were, at press time, preparing to celebrate their 85th anniversary.
  • $707,051,028 worth of wedding cake and fondant frosting (more than 16 tons) was consumed last year in the U.S.
  • The average American wedding costs $28,704.
  • In frugal Mississippi the average drops to $18,562.
  • In spendthrift New Jersey that jumps to $36,113.
  • David’s Bridal claims roughly 30% of the wedding-gown market, with dresses that start at $99.
  • Steel tycon Lakshmi Mittal spent an estimated $60 million on a five-day French wedding for his daughter, Vanisha, which included a 1,000 person engagement party at Versailles.
  • The discount chain Filene’s Basement has held its Running of the Brides event at dozens of stores each year since 1947.
  • At one store, shoppers cleared the racks of 3,000 marked-down dresses in a record 37 seconds.
  • In 1960, an American bride was typically 20 years old and a groom was 23. Today, they’re 27 and 29, respectively.
  • Six countries currently allow same-sex marriage: Belgium, Canada, Holland, Norway, South Africa, and Spain.
  • December is the most popular month to pop the question, accounting for one in five engagements.

Thanks for the guys over at FastCompany for sharing this data.

Is the groom playing golf?

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

golfIt’s one of the biggest wedding clichés out there (especially on the groom’s side of the wedding)… golf on the wedding day.

As the groom, you’ve probably been asked if you’re getting up early and teeing it up on the morning of the wedding. If you happen to be a golfer, we’re guessing that the answer to this question is yes.

Speaking from experience, wedding day golf can be a lot of fun. When I got married last spring, we double dipped and played both on the bachelor party as well as the morning of the wedding. As corny as it may sound, it was a great way to spend some extra time with friends and family before I made that trip to the altar and had my “play time” significantly reduced.

If you can get a big enough group to together, there are some great ways to enhance the golf outing. Here are a few ideas:

  • Bride’s side vs. groom’s side – Make it a little more competitive by pitting the bride’s relatives against the groom’s relatives. We did this on my wedding day and added a twist by making the losing team buy lunch afterwards (groom’s side won, of course).
  • Scramble – Divide everyone up into teams of four and play a scramble or best ball tourney.  This allows the beginners to keep up with the pros.
  • Playing on the bachelor party? If it’s a bachelor party round of golf, that means the groom doesn’t have to worry about being on good behavior. Make him drink for every shot over par he goes. Hilarity will ensue as his golf game gets worse after each hole.

*Shameless TMR plug*
