Is it OK to have a female Best Man or Groomsman?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

3593802473_f79816ddffCommon perception is that your Best Man and groomsmen are all guys. And based on 99.9% of weddings, this perception is true. However, selecting the people that are going to be standing next to you on the most important day of your life isn’t always that cut and dry.

Wedding party members should be chosen based on who you want to share this special moment with.  If your closest friend is girl or if you share a special bond with your sister, it’s perfectly acceptable to have her serve as Best Man (in a dress, not a tux).

The most important thing to remember is to think all wedding party member decisions through thoroughly. Remember, for 50% of you, this is the only wedding you’re going to have – so get it right!

Cheers!

Learn how to make a butterfly bouquet!

Butterfly Bouquet. Photo by Justin Bernhaut

Butterfly Bouquet. Photo by Justin Bernhaut

I saw this butterfly bouquet in the Summer 09 Martha Stewart Weddings magazine and just loved how beautiful and unique it was. When Laura Normandin married her husband Ben this year she created this lovely bouquet and we found instructions at Martha Stewart Weddings on how to make it:

Tools and Materials

  • Assorted floral butterflies, floraltrims.com has a lot of options
  • White floral-wire stems
  • White floral tape
  • Ribbon

Butterfly Bouquet How-To

Floral butterflies come on wires, making this project super simple. Tape the wires close to the butterfly bodies with white floral tape to cover them and create a uniform appearance. Then gather together a few butterflies and tape their wires together using white floral tape. Stagger the spacing, or tape the wires only at the ends so you’ll have lots of wire to bend.

If the wires are short, or if you want the butterflies to be able to be bent farther apart, attach individual butterflies or clusters of butterflies to floral-wire stems (lay the wire from a butterfly alongside a wire stem with a 1- or 2-inch overlap, and tape the two together). Make several clusters, and tape them together to create the desired shape. Finish the stem by wrapping it in ribbon.

Want a Different Bachelorette Party Idea?

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

One of our fabulous BravoBride vendors emailed me this week to let me know about a new service they were offering- the Boudoir Bachelorette Party. If you are looking a fun and truly unique spin on a Bachlorette party, this is it! Seattle Boudoir Photography came up with this concept after one of their team members was a maid of honor and struggled to come up with a different idea for her friend’s bachlorette party.  Seattle Boudoir Photography designed the Boudoir Bachelorette Parties to combine serious pampering with salon quality styling and a truly wonderful photographer in order to create beautiful, unforgettable photographs. And they top  it off with a whole lot of fun too.  If you are in the Seattle Area and want to plan a Boudoir party, visit their site to learn more and check out some of their photos below. Without a doubt this will be the experience of a lifetime.

For a limited time Seattle Boudoir Photography is also offering 10% off all prints to BravoBride readers!

I love the retro feel of this image!

This bride will never have to change her name

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

I came across this story yesterday; a soon-to-be married couple has the exact first and last name – Kelly Hildebrandt. The female Kelly Hildebrandt searched for her name on Facebook and found the male Kelly Hildebrandt. A few weeks later they met, fell in love and the rest is history.

This will definitely make the name changing process much easier for the female Kelly Hildebrandt since she won’t have to do it but other things might be more difficult.  Getting mail is quite a task because they have to open up everything to see whom it belongs to and they might get asked a few extra questions at airport security when traveling together. But nonetheless their unique ‘how we met’ story is a fun one to share and we wish both Kelly Hildebrandt’s a long and happy marriage. To read the full story click here.

6 tips to help pick out ‘The Ring’

You can ask almost any married guy, picking out an engagement ring can be quite a process. They learn all about the 4 C’s (Clarity, Color, Cut, and Carat Weight.) but if they haven’t gone ring shopping with their future fiancé they might not know what style of ring she likes. We compiled 6 tips for guys who want to pop the question with the perfect ring.

Look at her current style of jewelry

Does she wear white gold or silver all the time? If so they she probably won’t want a ring that’s made of yellow gold.

Ask her best friend

This is one of the most important things you can do. Typically your fiancé’s best friend will have a good idea of the type of jewelry she likes. Take her shopping with you before you decide on the final ring; just make sure she doesn’t let the cat of the bag before you pop the question.

Talk to her family
Her parents may have a family heirloom that your fiancé has always wanted made into a ring. This could also help save a lot of money if you don’t have to buy a diamond and it would have a lot of sentimental value.

Snag one of her rings

If  you have no idea what size your fiance’s finger is, don’t try to guess. Simply snag a ring out of her jewelry box and use it as your starting point. The ring will probably still need to be resized a bit so make sure that band you choose is resizeable.

Make the most of your budget
You don’t have to spend two months of your salary to find the perfect engagement ring. If the diamond is on the small side you can find a beautiful setting that will accentuate it. You can also consider not using a diamond as the center stone, sapphires come in many colors and are a great alternative. Lastly, preowned engagement rings are a terrific way to get the biggest bang for your buck. Most gently used engagement rings are discounted by 25%-70% off! Check out some of our gorgeous discounted engagement rings below (click on the image to view the full listing).

Take the easy way out
If you still have no idea what type of ring she’d like, take the easy way out. Just buy a simple solitaire and then shop for the setting together after you’ve finally popped the question.

The Man Registry: Michael Jackson Wedding Songs

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

3669630190_d1f3d740ca1

Watching the 24-7 Michael Jackson coverage the last few days got me thinking; what are the best Michael Jackson songs that are commonly played at weddings?

The Way You Make Me Feel

A very recognizable and fun song that can be played early on to get everyone up and going on the dance floor.

Favorite lyric – Ain’t nobody’s business, Ain’t nobody’s business (the way you make me feel).

I’ll Be There

This is my personal favorite Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 song. This is young Jacko at his best. I’ve seen the song done as the first dance as well as the mother/son dance.

Favorite lyric – “Let me fill your heart with joy and laughter. Togetherness, well , that’s all I’m after”

P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)

Brides and grooms may want to hold back on this one until the older relatives have vacated. P.Y.T. is guaranteed to rock the dance floor (mainly because the single guests are going to be looking for a PYT of their own to end the night with).

Favorite lyric – Nothin’ Can Stop This Burnin’. Desire To Be With You. Gotta Get To You Baby. Won’t You Come, It’s Emergency.

I Just Can’t Stop Loving You

Here’s a classic from pre-Neverland Michael (remember him? me neither). It’s a first dance option, but more likely a slow dance for later in the reception.

Favorite lyric – I Just Can’t Stop Loving You. And If I Stop…Then Tell Me, Just What Will I Do?

Thriller

Enough said: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YT6InvLJUzA

Favorite lyric: You hear the door slam and realize there’s nowhere left to run. You feel the cold hand and wonder if you’ll ever see the sun
