Gabi and Jack’s Rustic Chic Wedding

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

I am so thrilled to share Gabi and Jack’s wedding with you today! Gabi holds a special place in my heart, she was a marketing intern for over a year at BravoBride and then our guest bride blogger. You can learn about her adventures in wedding planning here. Read about their beautiful day as told by Gabi and take a look at their amazing photos captured by Jessica Hannon Photography. Enjoy!

Jack and I were lucky to have clear skies and warm temperatures the day that we got married, and blessed to have loving family and friends celebrate with us as we started our lives together.

Our ceremony was held at my childhood church and our reception took place on my family’s property. I couldn’t have asked for a better location to start my life with the man that I love than the place where I grew up. We rented a big tent, hired a blue grass band and set out yard games for everyone to play. Jack and I wanted everyone to be comfortable and to have fun, and that is exactly what happened.

Earlier this year, I wrote an post about why we hired a wedding planner… and I am so happy we did! Our wedding planners worked closely with us to make sure everything looked the way we wanted it to look and to make sure we were stress free the day-of. On terms of how we wanted the reception to look, our planners blew us away! They achieved a rustic-chic atmosphere by incorporating old wheels, windows and doors from my family’s barn (as mentioned in my previous blog post) and mixing it with vintage items they brought on their own. I couldn’t have imagined anything better for our wedding.

They worked my dad and brothers to tie trees up against the big tent poles, created beautiful bouquets and boutonnières for our entire wedding party and managed the entire day so we didn’t have to worry about anything. The Bliss Life truly made our lives bliss for that entire day.

Overall, we just have so many people to thank for making our day amazing. Our photographers caught such precious moments and made us feel completely comfortable while they were shooting us, the bands that played (The East Hill Blue Grass Band and Jack’s brother’s band) were spectacular and the support that we got from our families… well, I am just speechless. I couldn’t be more proud and honored to have my family and to have joined Jack’s. I wish the amount of joy and love that I experienced on my wedding day to every bride-to-be out there.

Thank you Gabi and Jack for sharing your beautiful day with us!

Wedding at a Castle

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

We are thrilled to bring you this week’s featured wedding, it looks like it’s straight from a fairy tale book! Carla and Mike were married on February 12th, 2012 and their reception was held at a gorgeous castle in New York. Bryan, from Bryan Avigne Photography photographed the event and tells us more about their big day below. Get ready to get swept away!

From Bryan: “I hadn’t met Carla and Mike until the day of the wedding as they are both very busy professionals from NYC. This was a 6-hour wedding that I thought would be pretty much straight forward. It was atypical in several ways. The first was that the church was very strict on photography rules and as a result, there were very few photos from the ceremony itself. However, when we returned to the Castle for formals, we took advantage of the outdoor grounds. That is until it started to rain! Family portraits were forced inside, but later in the night I was able to pull the couple outside for one shot in front of the castle. The wet driveway added to the beauty of the photo.”

“The other unique part of this wedding is that part of the groom’s family is from Sweden. It is tradition at Swedish weddings to have a microphone open throughout the entire dinner portion of the ceremony. Family members and friends are encouraged to go up at their convenience and tell stories or anecdotes of the couple. Dinner was followed by a slideshow of the couple, a speech or two more and then dancing.”

Thank you Carla and Mike for sharing your beautiful day with us!

Featured Bride – Monica H.

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Our newest featured bride is the beautiful Monica H. from Anderson, Texas. She and her groom Zack tied the knot this past summer. I absolutely love how Monica’s wedding decorations were a ‘surprise’ to her (more about that below) and she gave some really wonderful advice to brides-to-be. Take a look at their gorgeous country chic wedding and if you love her dress, it’s for sale here.

Where did you and your husband meet and how did you know he was the one?

My husband and I met through a mutual friend that I had known for a very long time. We were in College Station, hanging out, and Zack happened to be there with my other friend. Although we did not talk much that night, we had a few dances and the next day, he got my phone number from my friend. He called me, asked me out, cooked me dinner, and we knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together within the first two months of dating.

Where and when were you married?

Zack and I were married on July 16, 2011 in Anderson, Texas. The setting was an 1850′s historical church, Anderson Baptist Church. We are members there and the setting was absolutely beautiful and perfect. Even though the church had been restored, the rock walls are the original ones. Our reception was held at the Navasota Riverhall, which is a beautiful country setting, with amazing chandeliers and lighting.

What was your favorite memory of the day?

There are so many great memories from our wedding day. I had the privilege to wear my Gran’s wedding band that my Grandad had given her over 50 years before, as my “something old.” My Grandad is no longer with us so that was very special. Seeing my husband’s face standing at the end of the aisle when I was walking down with my dad is an unforgettable moment, and having so many amazing friends and family be there and help make our day special is something I will never forget. Another amazing memory is that all of my decorations were a surprise. I had people that I trusted to create a cake they thought I would love, flowers that I only contributed the vases for, and table decorations and set up that was done by the coordinator. This was my way of relieving stress and “letting go.” It all turned out amazing! Lastly, my parents never had their “first dance” so my brother, sister, and I dedicated a song to them so they could dance from the year they were married.

If you could do it all over again is there anything you would have done differently?

The only thing I would have done differently is have my ceremony videoed. My pictures are absolutely amazing, but I would love to be able to hear and see the music and people walk down the aisle and be able to relive those moments that I was not able to see since the bride is the last to enter.

Why did you decide to sell your wedding decorations?

My wedding decorations and dress were certainly one of a kind, but someone else deserves to have beautiful things as well. I think, by selling my decorations, that someone else can have a gorgeous wedding at a deep discount. Being able to share my things with others that will enjoy the same happiness is a rewarding feeling. You can find some of Monica’s decorations she has for sale here.

Do you have any tips or suggestions to help brides while planning a wedding?

Brides that are planning a wedding, let people help!!! Friends and family truly want to have a part in your big day. Find friends that are trustworthy and creative, give them a small vision of what you want, and let them run with it. It will all work out and it’s so exciting to be able to see their creations. Save money by shopping online, using coupons, and allowing friends to help. Also, try to have your hair and make up people come to you! It is so helpful to NOT have to travel the day of our wedding and it gives a true sense of unity with the bridal party when everyone can get dressed together. Don’t settle for anything less than what you want. And spend most of your money on the honeymoon. It’s the best part. Lastly, do not forget the reason you are getting married. It is not so you can have a beautiful wedding or an expensive dress. It is because two people truly love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together. Everything else is just small details compared to the rest of your lives together!

Featured Bride – Venessa Armentrout Jones

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

What could be better than a day at the beach? Well, how about a wedding on the beach! I am so excited to share our featured bride, Venessa’s, Caribbean wedding with you! Learn about how her and husband met and take a look at their warm, sunny tropical pictures. It’s a great and beautiful escape from winter!

How did you and your husband meet and when did you know he was the one?

My husband and I met through mutual friends (thank you Chuck D. – I’m forever grateful) – while attending college at The Ohio State University.  We were friends for four years before we started dating.  I knew my husband was “the one” because I truly felt comfortable around him at all times.  I found comfort in his presence, not his absence.  He encouraged me to reach for my goals, fostered a sense of self worth and treated me with the respect that each one of us rightly deserves.  I always feel confident, comfortable, loved, special and desired when I am with my husband.  After almost 10 years, I still feel the same thrill when I see him.

Where and when did you get married?

We were married on August 13, 2011 at Sea Wind Resort in Negril, Jamaica.  My husband and I LOVE the Caribbean so a beach wedding on the island of Jamaica was perfect!

What was your favorite memory of the day?

My favorite memory of the day is a tie between walking down the aisle at our ceremony and dancing at our reception.  Two totally different feelings but both equally amazing.  I wish I could redo our wedding day all over again. I had so much fun!

If you could anything differently, what would it be?

Overall, everything went as planned.  I’m not sure that I would do anything differently. But, if I could do it all over again, I would ask our DJ to play longer. I had so much fun at our reception. Our DJ kept the party going. I definitely didn’t want it to end.

Do you have any advice for other brides?

Start planning as early as possible. It gives you time to look for deals on craigslist, ebay, BravoBride or other discount websites. Don’t make a huge DIY list. Time flies by. If you are planning a destination wedding, hire a wedding coordinator.  I worked exclusively with our wedding coordinator and everything turned out fabulous.

Thank you Venessa for sharing your beautiful wedding with us!

Featured Bride – Sally C.

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Sally and her husband rolled out the red carpet for their beautiful Southern California wedding. Their day was filled full of laughter, love and tears (just wait until you read what Sally did for her wedding favors)! And if you fall in love with her dress, it’s for sale on BravoBride!

Where did you and your husband meet and how did you know he was the one?

Chuck and I met at church, we are both in the entertainment Industry so we really hit it off. No sparks or love at first sight, we just got along really well. Six months later I ended up working with him and his team, so officially he was my boss which makes it kind of fun! We became great friends quite quickly and started going out to meals after work but it took about four months for him to start making a move. I was in denial about the whole thing even though I would wake up thinking about him. So it wasn’t until he shared his feelings with me that I finally let go and we started going out. Because we were such great friends, it made it so easy to be together and we already had a great foundation to build upon. I knew pretty instantly that he was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. We got engaged 6 months later on Thanksgiving day!

Where and when were you married?

We got married at Angeles National Golf Club right near our home which has the most beautiful view and a perfect outdoor setting for a wedding. We had our ceremony at our home which is like the ‘Garden of Eden’ and meant the whole day was incredibly personal. Having it at your home or own location is by far more personal but makes for a lot more work! We even rolled out the red carpet for our guests to be honored and celebrated!

What was your favorite memory of the day?

Definitely the ceremony and having all our loved ones witnessing our union. We wrote our own vows and had communion together which gave us time to pause and take in the moment. I loved the cheers and screaming when we walked back down the aisle as ‘Husband and Wife’. The whole day was magical!

If you could do it all over again is there anything you would have done differently?

I would have hired our wedding coordinator much earlier. She was a friend and came on board about two months prior to the wedding. She was amazing and I just wish we had had her earlier to save all the stress. Also, a piece of advice for the women, don’t forget to make sure your groom is fully looked after on the day of the wedding. As the bride, I didn’t lift a finger for anything at least a week before as everyone fussed over me. However, on the day of the wedding my groom was rolling out red carpet as the helpers flaked. He also forget his hair gel, etc. and the groomsmen didn’t have all that covered. Small things but it’s really important that they don’t get missed in all the planning.

Why did you decide to sell your wedding dress?

Well, it’s a beautiful dress and I don’t see any reason to keep it in a box. My children are unlikely to want to wear it so it would be amazing to have another bride be as blessed as I was. It’s for sale at a wonderful price- $1500 which is over 50% off.

Sally’s handmade silk rose hair pin and Bari Jay bridesmaid dresses are for sale too!

Do you have any tips or suggestions to help brides while planning a wedding?

Definitely spend the bucks on a wedding planner! They know all the things that we don’t consider until last minute, they have all the contacts, best ideas, they take the stress and allow you to be the beautiful bride! I planned on saving money by not having one but thankfully changed my mind half way through! Bridal brain is a very real thing and believe me, 2-3 weeks before the wedding, bridal brain will kick in and your memory retention is 2 seconds max. I am amazed more brides don’t actually forget their wedding day. :)

I saved money on flowers, we just had bouquets made and did the centerpieces and boutonnieres ourselves. We also served the sit down meal buffet style which saves a lot of money on personnel. We had a lot of friends donate time and energy to things as their gift to us. Such as a stunt car for the wedding transportation, wedding planning time and handmade invitations. Here’s a wonderful idea that got the best response of the day. Getting to spend quality time with everyone is hard on the wedding day but you also want them to know how special they are, so instead of buying favors that are generally useless and never remembered, we wrote each person a card. Our gift were words. We wrote about what we loved them and what gifts we saw in them and any blessing that we felt was appropriate. A friend of mine made the cards and I typed up the comments and added them to the hand made cards. Everyone cried when they read their card as it was so personal and thoughtful!

Thank you Sally for sharing your gorgeous wedding with us!

Featured Bride – Ashley K.

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Feast your eyes on this beautiful vintage wedding and our featured bride Ashley K. from Olympia, Washington. Ashley told us about her big day and shared a little wedding planning advice too!

Where did you and your husband meet and how did you know he was the one?

We were both elementary school teachers, and met through a mutual friend.  We had so much in common that we clicked right away. After our third date we knew we would get married. It was as simple as that, he was the one.

Where and when were you married?
We were married on August 7th at Albee’s Garden in Olympia,WA

What was your favorite memory of the day?
The entire day was beautiful and perfect. But I remember feeling calm and peaceful when I was around Rob. He grounded me.

If you could do it all over again is there anything you would have done differently?
I would have taken a few more moments to just enjoy the day. I would have loved to have been a guest at the wedding. Walking around enjoying the decor and scenery.

Do you have any tips or suggestions to help brides while planning a wedding?

Ask for help. All the friends and family that made things and decorated really helped create the day. Work hard up until the wedding so the day of, you can enjoy it.

Thank you Ashley and Rob for sharing your amazing wedding with us!

Featured Bride – Peggy C.

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

We have such a beautiful wedding for you today! Our featured bride, Peggy, and her husband Rob were just married this October at a picturesque manor in Virginia. Take a look at their amazing day below and all the little details that went into it.

Where did you and your husband meet and how did you know he was the one?

Rob and I met while out one night, he was with a group of guys which included someone I went to college with, and I was with a girlfriend. Rob got my number and contacted me the next day and even though he was super busy with work and being right in the middle of his MBA program, he always made time for me. We both knew pretty quickly that we were “the ones”. I’m usually pretty hesitant when I date someone new to decide if I really like them, but I knew right away with Rob and my friends can tell you that that’s how they knew he was special to me

Where and when were you married?

We were married on October 7th, 2011 in Berryville, Virginia at Rosemont Manor. We didn’t know when we were picking the date and booking Rosemont Manor that we had chosen Rob’s parents’ wedding date. We were married on their 44th anniversary which made the day even more meaningful.

What was your favorite memory of the day? My favorite memory of the day was when we were saying our vows. I had thought it would be hard to be up there with everyone staring at us, as neither of us particularly like that sort of attention, but it was a wonderful feeling to be standing there making those promises to each other.

Their cake pop favors (pictured on the left), were a huge hit with the guests and on the right are Peggy’s place cards. She found antique skeleton keys and attached one to each card. The front had the guest’s name with table number and the back said, The key to a happy marriage is… and each guest was asked to write some words of advice for them. Some of them were serious but a lot of them were funny, like “My grandma used to say, never tell your husband no…. in bed!”

Peggy found this bird house online that doubles as a gift card box. It came with a second roof without the card slot to be used as a real bird house after the wedding.

Do you have any tips or suggestions to help brides while planning a wedding?

A suggestion that I would make to other brides is to really feel comfortable with your vendors, I had total faith in the people that were arranging the flowers, the DJ, the photographer, and the staff at Rosemont Manor and everything went off without a hitch. I had no worries on our wedding day and I was able to enjoy every moment. I would also suggest that you make the wedding what you want it to be. Rob and I were almost the last singles in our groups of friends and didn’t feel like we needed to do the bouquet toss and garter tradition (I’ve never really liked that part anyway) and so we left it out and no one seemed to even notice. So be as traditional or non-tradiotnal as you want to be, make the day your own.

To save money we did little things that added up, like having the meal buffet style instead of a served dinner, no one minded getting up to get their food. I also had a wonderful flower vendor who’s full service wedding was a little too expensive for us so she agreed to do our bouquets, bouts, and centerpieces without any other flower arrangments and without delivery. We had to go pick up the flowers that morning, but we saved a lot by doing it that way.

If you could do it all over again is there anything you would have done differently?

There really isn’t anything that I would do differently. I loved the whole day!

Featured Wedding – Shannon & Jesse

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

We’re so excited to share this wedding with you today! Shannon and Jesse tied the knot on August 20th, 2011 in Greene, NY. Because Jesse’s grandmother believed weddings that happened on the hill where the happiest, Jesse and Shannon were married at his grandparents home (love that!).Read all about their wedding below and if you happen to fall in love with some of the decor, you’re in luck because a lot of it is listed for sale on BravoBride!

Jcrew wedding dress

Where did you and your husband meet and how did you know he was the one?

In 2002, we were both working at retail store in Wilkes Barre, PA. While I was working at the front of the store, three firefighters came storming in the building. Why? It turns out that the anchor store in the strip mall had received a bomb threat.

Seriously? In Wilkes Barre? You also have to remember that this was 2002; it had not been a full year since the horrific events of 9-11 happened. Any kind of treat was treated with serious precaution.

Therefore we evacuated the store immediately and instructed employees to meet at the “safe point”.

Since all the employees had to go to the safe point, the Barnes and Noble across the parking lot, I decided to drive myself. Just as I was pulling away, I saw that the new guy (aka Jesse) standing by himself. Being nice, I asked Jes if he would like a ride to the Barnes and Noble.

We grabbed some coffee from Starbucks in Barnes and Noble and sat outside chatting. Over the next few weeks we talked to each other randomly in passing… “Well why don’t you go out with a guy like me?” He would ask.

“Because I’m afraid of losing brain cells” I would respond.

However one Friday everything changed. I was working a morning shift and Jes had the pleasure of closing. In passing I joke “So, when are you taking me out?”

“How about tonight”

“Umm… (long pause)… s..ur..e”

“Great, I’m closing tonight so why don’t we meet at Eddy’s at midnight.” The rest was history.

Jesse and I might do things a little backwards than most couples. We started living together in 2004, engaged in 2009 and married in 2011. I guess that we like to take our time before making big decisions.

The major reason for the long engagement period was we could not figure out what kind of wedding we wanted to host. We would look at blogs and fall in love with the destination beach weddings and dream of the warm sand between our toes.  However, what beach? What country?

To add an additional twist into our wedding planning, my family (excluding my parents) lives in England. Jesse’s family lives in Upstate New York. Traditionally the couple gets married in the bride’s hometown, we grew up in Northern California, however currently we live in Philadelphia. So where do we host a wedding?

Growing up I was always jealous of friends that could run to Grandma’s house when they had a minor disagreement with their parents. Jesse comes from a huge and caring family. Here was my chance to get the extended family network I never had. It wasn’t easy; in fact it was quite overwhelming. So many personalities!

Every time we spent time with Jesse’s Grandmother, she always mentioned couples that got married on the “hill” had the best marriages. It didn’t matter where we were, we could be at one of her Grandchildren’s wedding and she would always tell us that the weddings that happen on the “hill” are the ones that last. In 2010, we were tired of trying to accommodate possible guests, tired of looking into elaborate elopement get-a-ways, and his Grandmothers words kept ringing in my ear. We had to get married on the “hill” – her hill – the one in her backyard.

What was your favorite memory of the day?

The day really flew by rather quickly. However, I have to say once I got out of the car, met my father in front of the house and started walking towards Jesse, the day was pretty magical. My dad and I had a quick chat on the walk down. “Shan, you doing alright? Are you nervous?”

“Dad, walk faster will you… we really don’t have all day for this?”

When we finally met up with the officiant and Jesse, it finally kicked in. OMG – everyone is looking at me. ECK! Then I started hearing the tears from my mother… oh geez, there goes my knees.

“Ha-ha, look she is finally shaking! She must be nervous after all.”

Thanks, Dad. I knew I could count on you to point out the obvious.

Honestly, I really didn’t expect to have all the emotions of the day to hit me right then and there. It did… like a ton of bricks! I don’t know if it is my favorite memory but it’s definitely the one that sticks out the most.

Diy wedding projects

If you could do it all over again is there anything you would have done differently?

Overall, the wedding was wonderful! I am so glad that I convince Jes to have it at his grandparent’s home. The location was perfect and we could not have asked for better love and support from his extended family members.

Why did you decide to sell your wedding items?

Why not! I don’t need 13 lanterns hanging around my house!

Do you have any tips or suggestions to help brides while planning a wedding?

The idea of planning a wedding three hours away from where we lived actually stressed us out, so we decided to hire a wedding planner. Since we where on a budget, we arranged for her to provide us with vendor support, recommendations and handle the day of coordination. This was the best purchase we made for the wedding.

In order to help with the planning, I opened a Dropbox account to share files with our wedding planner. I would save blog posts that would evoke the style we like and drew sketches of what the tables should look like.

A wedding is about the union of a couple and the elements of the wedding should reflect the couple and their styles. We stressed over the details that we felt reflected us as a couple. We decided to embark on DIY projects that showcased our tastes and us. Many people think of DIY wedding projects and little things like tears of joy packages come to mind. Take a step back and really think about the elements that will add a true benefit to your event. It can be as simple as picking a non-traditional drink menu!

Since we are from Philadelphia, we decided to serve only Philadelphia area brewed craft beers including Victory’s “Summer Love”. Jesse built a table container so the beer could stand upright while in ice and he made the same style of containers for the wine selection.

I’m glad we chose to have cupcakes. We were able to have margarita flavored cake with a tequila frosting, a Guinness flavored cake with Bailey frosting and a purple velvet to tie in to the rest of the event.

One of the antiques that can be found in Jesse’s Grandmother home is an old fashion teacart. It has been used in every wedding held at the home since it was purchased, so we had to find a way to make it a feature in ours. We decided that it should showcase the three family weddings that took place on the hill prior to us. Since it is was painted black and we decided to brighten it up by adding milk vases and bright flowers to it. For an added treat we left a dish filled with mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, our favorite candy.

Since one of our reception tables featured painted Ikea lanterns, we used a large lantern in the same style and cut out a slot on top for our cards. For our guest book we made a guest tree. I made this myself by signing up for Adobe’s free 30-day software and played with purchased stock graphics for the tree. Since I had the free trial software, I then created postcards for each place setting explainimg our donation to Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society.

Our ceremony was a labor of love. It took the entire family to help with its creation. Jesse’s uncles regularly bale hay on their property, therefore we were able to use some of the bales for free! Jesse’s mom created the quilts to cover the hay, his father built the planter boxes, and his Aunt spent hours every week deadheading all the petunias to make sure the planters where nice and full for the wedding.

For a surprise to the family, we had set up a table of champagne in front of the ceremony sites. We displayed a picture of his Grandparent’s when they where young along side this poem, author unknown:

“Those we love don’t go away,

They walk beside us every day,

Unseen, unheard, but always near,

Still loved, still missed and very dear.

Please toast to their memory and the new ones we are about to create.”

So, why have champagne before the ceremony… well, why not? I was reading on a planning website that a champagne toast is the biggest waste of money at the reception. I totally agree, mostly because its after cocktail hour and I already have a drink in hand.  This was the one element that our traditional style parents asked us about – Are you doing a champagne toast? Not wanting to say no, we decided that we would reinterpret the tradition.

Featured Wedding – Andrea & John

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Our featured wedding this week is Andrea and John’s beautiful backyard wedding. John even took the time to answer our questions  and we are thrilled to have a groom’s perspective on the big day. They also have many of their wedding items for sale on BravoBride too! Read on to see what they did to make their wedding not only fun but uniquely their own.

Where and when did you meet and how did you know each other was ‘the one?’

DREA: I met my husband John on a dating website.  I had been on 67 first dates in the period of about a year a half.  I dated all kinds of interesting guys – but never really had that moment when I thought “this is the guy I should be with.”  When John and I went on our first date, I thought he was awesome. We had great conversation and he was thoughtful and funny. But in my mind, there was no chemistry. It took me about 24 hours to realize that I had been dating people with whom “chemistry” for me meant that I felt I was needed. That I was filling a void in someone else’s life. With John, he didn’t need me to fill any void in his life. He was great on his own and looking for a companion to add to his already great life. I decided that was exactly the reason why I needed to see him again. Since then, we’ve had a wonderfully fulfilling, stable relationship with tons of real chemistry – a respect, admiration and attraction for each other. I feel so incredibly lucky to be the person he chose to marry.

JOHN: What I liked most about Drea at first was her creativity – how many people do you know who majored in art AND math in college? She was smart, funny, kind, interesting, adventurous. And pretty. Fairly soon I realized I was always enjoying myself with her, no matter what we did, and she both challenged me and supported me constantly. I think that’s what’s made our relationship stable and fulfilling

DREA: We were married in our backyard because we feel so comfortable there and we could have complete control.

JOHN: I have a sister in Paris, which limited when we could get married, so we were married on August 20th – exactly 6 months after I proposed. So the back yard had the advantage of being available on short notice.  It was also incredibly important to us that our wedding be casual, personal, and FUN. Having it in our backyard was one way of ensuring that it was all those things. Finally, the size of the yard created the perfect upper limit on the size of the wedding, which kept the wedding personal and fun.

What was your favorite memory of the day?

DREA: It’s tough to say what my favorite memory of the day was. It was like being in a dream.  We felt completely surrounded by the people we love most in the world and I felt so happy and at peace that I have this incredible guy who will be on my team for the rest of my life. The wedding coordinator we had for the day said that she was surprised and maybe even a little worried about how calm I was as I was sitting having my hair and makeup done and waiting for everything to start. It’s hard to explain how I felt in that moment – how completely at peace I felt – and it’s lasted the 3 weeks since then.

One decision we made that I felt was a good one – we had 2 of our favorite and funniest friends MC the night, instead of having a DJ.  Their performance was completely memorable because they know us so well.  And many of the moments in their performance, including an interpretive dance they did to the main titles of “Six Feet Under” (long story) had me laughing so hard I was crying.

JOHN: There’s a scene from the TV show Chuck, where Chuck’s sister obsesses over twinkle lights at her brother’s engagement party, insisting it has to be “magical.” I don’t have any one favorite memory of the evening – although the interpretive dance to Six Feet Under was pretty special – but several times during the evening – once during the ceremony and a few times during the reception – I remember looking out at everyone and thinking that we were having exactly the wedding we wanted, with exactly the people we wanted with us. Which was, in fact, pretty magical.

If you could do it all over again is there anything you would have done differently?

DREA:I can honestly say that I don’t think either of us would have done anything differently.

JOHN: Me neither.

Do you have any tips or suggestions to help brides while planning a wedding? And/or tips on how to save money on a wedding?

DREA: I work in television and so planning events feels very similar to pre-production on a shoot, so it’s not an uncomfortable place for me. But I think for most people who don’t plan and make lists, I would recommend getting started as early as you can and just taking one thing at a time. I looked at a lot of photos online, which was helpful since we did all of our own decor and lighting. I shopped quite a bit in downtown LA for fabrics, our rings, flowers – everything was cheaper there but you had to roll up your sleeves and dig for it AND be willing to bargain! We liked the DIY, rustic look so really went for it with our signage and the whole look of the wedding.

I highly recommend carrying around an iPad or photos in a binder so that you can talk to the vendors and tell them exactly the look you’re going for – or if you have a number of inspirations, to ask for their advice.

JOHN: On a DIY wedding like ours, have a good sense of what you are able to do yourselves and what you’ll need professional help doing. We knew we wanted a lot of lights, and while we were able to string them, we did hire someone to run power to the back of our yard and put in poles that supported cables to which the light strings attached. The same person actually built our arbor, but I designed and built the system for putting up the curtains quickly.

Guys, think of this as an excuse to use power tools.

Thank you Andrea and John for sharing your amazing wedding with us!

Featured Bride – Debra B.

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

I am so excited to feature Debra B. from Seattle! Not only did she make such a beautiful bride but she’s also a friend of mine. She was kind enough to share her favorite moments and photos from her big day with us.

Where did you and your husband meet and how did you know he was the one?

We met on match.com. I knew he was “the one” after a few months of dating. It was once I realized how honest, loving, and trustworthy he was that it really started to become clear. Those traits won me over, and I quickly started to fall for him even more.

Where and when were you married?
We were married July 30, 2010 in Sekiu, WA – on a private beach on the Olympic Peninusla.

What was your favorite memory of the day?

Having so many of our close friends and family in one spot, enjoying a special day and special place together.

If you could do it all over again is there anything you would have done differently?
That’s a good question! I probably would have hired a crew to do the clean-up the next day!

Do you have any tips or suggestions to help brides while planning a wedding?
To save money – DEFINITELY shop for key items on BravoBride and Craigslist. Also, if you can’t find what you absolutely must have on either of these sites, buy what you need new, factoring in the fact that you can make back some of your investment by re-selling them later on BravoBride! We saved so much money by doing both of these things! For example, instead of renting linens, we bought them, which cost the same as renting (roughly $11 per tablecloth), and we were able to sell them after the wedding, collecting half of the money back – which we could have never done had we rented them.

Debra was a true DIY bride and did almost every little detail herself. Her stunning photos are by Dana Pleasant Photography. Dana is shooting Debra’s maternity photos next month too! Thanks again Debra for sharing your beautiful day with us!
