Balloons Aren’t Just for Birthdays

Monday, January 28th, 2013

Wedding and balloons – when I put the two together, an image (much like below) crosses my mind.

Quick! Erase that image and continue to read on.

Balloons really are back. They are either clustered in multiples to create fabulous props for photo shoots or grand in size to accentuate the moment. However used, the balloons we chose to preview add style, romance and whimsy to that special day. Here are some ideas in hopes that you may be able to shake the “tacky balloon” myth of past.

Wow, now these are the kinda balloons that I love! Extra-large 36” in diameter with flowing tassels and style galore. Geronimo makes some of the best balloon designs yet. The detail on the string with the frills and pom poms takes these balloons over the top!

Love this Balloon Photo Chandelier! It’s a DIY idea from WeddingChicks.com. This would be wonderful at the rehearsal dinner or at a bridal shower. What a great way to tell your story, a memory bank for you and your friends to look at and enjoy through the night.

These letter and number balloons are not for the kid party next door but for the “glam” factor in your wedding backdrop, or the”wow” in your Save the Date Card. Very cool and stylish. You can find them at this Etsy shop.

Okay, so technically these are not real balloons but actual hand-blown glass decorative wall hangings. They are so hip I just had to add them in. How cool would they be used in a wedding or engagement photo shoot! Adore that they are forever.

If someone had said sparkly lights and balloons this is not what I would have pictured. This is absolutely stylish and chic! Love how it draws the eye up to fun and color in such a traditional tent setting.

Sweet and adorable why not carry the balloon theme onto the cake. This is a fabulous cake topper perfect for a treat table.

If Martha Stewart is featuring it as a trend then you know it is going to be around for a while. This gorgeous table setting from Martha shows how beautiful light and airy colored balloons create an elegant setting. We also love them for bride and groom photo props!

Lastly, clusters of balloons high and low to create the perfect props that capture this brilliant and artistic engagment photo by Brittany Esther. Balloons have definitely made a comeback and we love it!

Styling Your Reception: 5 Upcycling Ideas

Monday, June 4th, 2012

As the big day draws near, (under 100 days until I say I do!) Jack and I realize that we have our work cut out for us in prepping the reception site for our guests. For the rest of the summer we are devoting ourselves to making sure the property is trimmed and ready to be used… but functionality is only part of what we want. We also want it to look amazing and to be memorable. Luckily, we have a creative wedding planner who is going to help us style the property so that it will not only be trimmed and mowed, but also have some cool accent pieces to help create a romantic feel for the night. For this post, I wanted to share some ideas that we might be incorporating into our wedding.

1. Vintage Suitcases
My dad just happened to own several really cool vintage suitcases and we just happen to have several really cool ideas with how we can incorporate them into the wedding. Surprisingly simple, classy and fun!

2. Old Chairs
While looking for styling items in the barn, we found some old chairs would not be fit for guests but could be fit for something else. They have amazing backs and can easily be worked into the scenery by adding a burst of color to them.

3. Upcycle Items with Meaning
Now I know not many people will own the item needed for this idea, but it’s worth sharing. My family has owned one of these Singer sewing wheels since I was little… in fact, I believe it was my grandmother’s. We used to play with it when my siblings and I were kids, but now that we’ve all grown up I think it’s appropriate to upcycle it. This is a great idea to bring new functionality to it while still keeping the memories attached with it.

4. Vintage Bikes
Since my dad grew up in a large family, we just happen to have a few vintage bikes lying from when he was younger. We were discussing some fun ideas with what we could do with them and, just like the chair idea, we came to the conclusion that flowers are a great way to spruce up something old yet classic.

5. Tea Cups Saucers
I mentioned this idea in a previous post, 5 Ideas for Table Décor but a good idea is worth repeating. By upcylcing tea cup saucers, you are able to add a little personality to your dessert table, your guest’s table or even the head table. Find what you like (or use what you have) and create your own beautiful, and personalized, tier and use it for whatever you like! The best part is that you can take it home for future use or give it to a friend or family member.

These are only a few ideas that we are contemplating to use as decorations for the reception and I hope that they inspire you for your own wedding. Do you have a great upcycling idea? I’d love to see it! Just post a comment down below or on our Facebook page and tell us what you have done or what you want to do, and perhaps I’ll use the idea for my own wedding!

BravoBride Guide – DIY Wedding Centerpieces

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Flowers are very beautiful but they also cost a pretty penny when you are decorating an entire wedding reception. Many brides decide to break out their creative side in order to save some cash. Here is an example of one bride’s way of saving money and still having vibrant centerpieces at her fall wedding.

If you don't want to only use silk flowers, you can mix in real ones too.

To begin, choose an assortment of different flowers, greens and fillers that fit the theme and color scheme of your wedding. This bunch of artificial floral and fauna came from Michael’s Craft and cost approximately $42. Best of all, you can resell these do it yourself wedding centerpieces after the wedding.

For this bride’s wedding, she has a garden oriented theme and the main color she chose was navy. She picked a variety of cool colored flowers that are less traditional and has decided to use peacock feathers to compliment them.

To add a slash of vintage flare she is using mason jars instead of vases. This blue glass jar came from an antique store and cost only $4. You can also find used mason jars on BravoBride.

Other supplies that will be needed are scissors and wire cutters.

Begin by cutting down the stems to the approximate desired height. Hold the stem next to the vessel you will be placing them in. the initial cut to the stems should have all blossoms standing a minimum of 4 inches above the top of the vase/jar/etc.

At this point you need to decide whether or not you want the arrangement be round or to have a distinct front and back. Add stems with large blooms first. Adjust position and height to desired location. Shorten stems as needed.

Once large blossoms are in place, add smaller floral fillers.

Lastly, add green fillers and any other elements you desire such as peacock feathers, sticks and artificial ferns.

We would like to give a huge thanks to bride-to-be Samantha Prudhon for sharing her ideas and designs with us and wish her the best wish her the best in all her wedding preparations.

Large hurricane vases containing floating candles are placed on either side of a path strewn with rose petals. If you are picking from your own garden, pluck them early in the morning when roses are freshest. For a more inexpensive approach, use fake flower petals or just have the large vases as a pathway to the wedding and/or reception.

This monogrammed banner is a cute and sweet way of leading your guests to the church and/or reception. It is also a great way of greeting your guests to the event.

Use topiary’s to display a banner for your big day; this is a great way to introduce your guests to your wedding and/or reception.
