The Gabi Chronicles – A Unique Dinner Choice

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Food is likely the most costly aspect of a reception- besides the alcohol that is- and you want to make sure that the meal at your wedding lives up to your expectations. Since Jack and I are having our wedding reception outside, we were lucky to have a variety options to choose from, but to be honest, we really didn’t have a clue on where to start. It wasn’t until a friend mentioned how they had a hog-roast for their wedding that we knew what we wanted to do.

Jack and I agreed that a buffet style hog-roast would be the perfect way to feed our guests on our big day. The idea just seemed to fit as the wedding is outside, both Jack and I love barbeques and we both want the day to have a semi-casual feel to it.

After we had decided what to eat, it was time to decide who would cook it for us. I went online and found a local catering company that had rave reviews, was close to our reception site and, best of all, had great prices! I have always hated the idea of basing a guest list on the price of a plate of food, which I know happens when hosting an event at a nice venue, so it was nice not to worry about that. By going the BBQ way, our cost per plate is about $6, which includes set up and take down, utensils and a variety of food choices for our guests.

Now, before everyone gasps at the thought of having a giant dead pig at our wedding, fear not! Although we would have loved to cook the hog on site, we decided it best not to at the suggestion of the catering company due to the large number of guests we will be inviting. Instead, the caterer will cook it prior to the wedding and serve it up along side vegetarian and alternative meat options. After all, we want to be respectful to all of our guest’s personal tastes.

Jack and I are happy that we found a catering option that fits with our personal style and stays within our budget. We hope that this post inspires you to think outside the box when considering catering options for your wedding and we encourage you to share your ideas with us in the comment box below. We are still trying to figure out a dessert option and would love to hear suggestions! Thanks for reading! Until next week!

The Gabi Chronicles

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

I am so excited to officially introduce you to our newest blogger, bride-to-be Gabi G., from Minnesota. Actually Gabi has been working with BravoBride for well over a year but now she’s the bride! Gabi will be chronicling her wedding planning for us, so stay tuned for all the trials and triumphs that lead to her big day!

For over a year, I have interned with BravoBride as a marketing associate and have seen amazing offers and ideas roll in and out of this website in efforts to inspire brides all over the world. Now, I am planning my own wedding and have been asked to share my experience of planning on a budget with the BravoBride community. It is a great opportunity to, not only share ideas, but to also gain insights from other brides from all over the world. I would like to start off by letting you get to know my fiancé and I a little better.

How Jack and I Met:

Jack (my fiancé) and I met in 2008 while attending the University of Minnesota. We worked together, which meant we spent a lot of time together. For two years, Jack and I built an incredible friendship; a friendship that eventually turned into the foundation of our relationship. He is, by far, the most amazing person I have ever met and I am so lucky to be able to spend the rest of my life with him.

The Proposal:

Jack and I had only been dating several months before he popped the question. On a beautiful September day in 2010, he took me on a date to the rose gardens in Minneapolis. At this point, I was only a week away from moving to Seattle, WA to live with my sister and we were trying to spend as much time together as possible. He had been particularly “lovely-dovey” all day and I didn’t think too much of it since he had been acting that way for some time. After taking pictures by all the beautiful fountains and flowers, we started to walk up a near-by hill. I noticed that Jack started breathing heavier when we started up the hill and all I could think was, “He can’t be that out of shape….”.

Once we got to the top of the hill I started to suggested places to sit or areas to go, but with every suggestion he said no. I was a bit confused until finally he asked if he could take my picture. He had me go down the hill a ways so that he could- supposedly- get the rose gardens in the background (where in actuality he was getting the ring ready in his pocket). When I came back to him, we embraced and I could feel him shaking. The next thing I knew, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him. I was totally shocked but absolutely thrilled. Of course I said yes and we went on to call everyone we knew.

I left for Seattle that next week and for the following year, Jack and I carried on a long distance engagement. Although difficult, it only strengthened our relationship. Now I am back in Minnesota and am diving head first into wedding planning. Both Jack and I hope that you enjoy our future posts through BravoBride and encourage you to share your ideas and experiences along the way! Be sure to catch our first official post about what we plan to do for catering on our big day. Thanks for reading and until next time, have a great week!

Featured Bride – Peggy C.

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

We have such a beautiful wedding for you today! Our featured bride, Peggy, and her husband Rob were just married this October at a picturesque manor in Virginia. Take a look at their amazing day below and all the little details that went into it.

Where did you and your husband meet and how did you know he was the one?

Rob and I met while out one night, he was with a group of guys which included someone I went to college with, and I was with a girlfriend. Rob got my number and contacted me the next day and even though he was super busy with work and being right in the middle of his MBA program, he always made time for me. We both knew pretty quickly that we were “the ones”. I’m usually pretty hesitant when I date someone new to decide if I really like them, but I knew right away with Rob and my friends can tell you that that’s how they knew he was special to me

Where and when were you married?

We were married on October 7th, 2011 in Berryville, Virginia at Rosemont Manor. We didn’t know when we were picking the date and booking Rosemont Manor that we had chosen Rob’s parents’ wedding date. We were married on their 44th anniversary which made the day even more meaningful.

What was your favorite memory of the day? My favorite memory of the day was when we were saying our vows. I had thought it would be hard to be up there with everyone staring at us, as neither of us particularly like that sort of attention, but it was a wonderful feeling to be standing there making those promises to each other.

Their cake pop favors (pictured on the left), were a huge hit with the guests and on the right are Peggy’s place cards. She found antique skeleton keys and attached one to each card. The front had the guest’s name with table number and the back said, The key to a happy marriage is… and each guest was asked to write some words of advice for them. Some of them were serious but a lot of them were funny, like “My grandma used to say, never tell your husband no…. in bed!”

Peggy found this bird house online that doubles as a gift card box. It came with a second roof without the card slot to be used as a real bird house after the wedding.

Do you have any tips or suggestions to help brides while planning a wedding?

A suggestion that I would make to other brides is to really feel comfortable with your vendors, I had total faith in the people that were arranging the flowers, the DJ, the photographer, and the staff at Rosemont Manor and everything went off without a hitch. I had no worries on our wedding day and I was able to enjoy every moment. I would also suggest that you make the wedding what you want it to be. Rob and I were almost the last singles in our groups of friends and didn’t feel like we needed to do the bouquet toss and garter tradition (I’ve never really liked that part anyway) and so we left it out and no one seemed to even notice. So be as traditional or non-tradiotnal as you want to be, make the day your own.

To save money we did little things that added up, like having the meal buffet style instead of a served dinner, no one minded getting up to get their food. I also had a wonderful flower vendor who’s full service wedding was a little too expensive for us so she agreed to do our bouquets, bouts, and centerpieces without any other flower arrangments and without delivery. We had to go pick up the flowers that morning, but we saved a lot by doing it that way.

If you could do it all over again is there anything you would have done differently?

There really isn’t anything that I would do differently. I loved the whole day!

Featured Wedding – Andrea & John

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Our featured wedding this week is Andrea and John’s beautiful backyard wedding. John even took the time to answer our questions  and we are thrilled to have a groom’s perspective on the big day. They also have many of their wedding items for sale on BravoBride too! Read on to see what they did to make their wedding not only fun but uniquely their own.

Where and when did you meet and how did you know each other was ‘the one?’

DREA: I met my husband John on a dating website.  I had been on 67 first dates in the period of about a year a half.  I dated all kinds of interesting guys – but never really had that moment when I thought “this is the guy I should be with.”  When John and I went on our first date, I thought he was awesome. We had great conversation and he was thoughtful and funny. But in my mind, there was no chemistry. It took me about 24 hours to realize that I had been dating people with whom “chemistry” for me meant that I felt I was needed. That I was filling a void in someone else’s life. With John, he didn’t need me to fill any void in his life. He was great on his own and looking for a companion to add to his already great life. I decided that was exactly the reason why I needed to see him again. Since then, we’ve had a wonderfully fulfilling, stable relationship with tons of real chemistry – a respect, admiration and attraction for each other. I feel so incredibly lucky to be the person he chose to marry.

JOHN: What I liked most about Drea at first was her creativity – how many people do you know who majored in art AND math in college? She was smart, funny, kind, interesting, adventurous. And pretty. Fairly soon I realized I was always enjoying myself with her, no matter what we did, and she both challenged me and supported me constantly. I think that’s what’s made our relationship stable and fulfilling

backyard weddingbackyard wedding ideas
Where and when were you married?

DREA: We were married in our backyard because we feel so comfortable there and we could have complete control.

JOHN: I have a sister in Paris, which limited when we could get married, so we were married on August 20th – exactly 6 months after I proposed. So the back yard had the advantage of being available on short notice.  It was also incredibly important to us that our wedding be casual, personal, and FUN. Having it in our backyard was one way of ensuring that it was all those things. Finally, the size of the yard created the perfect upper limit on the size of the wedding, which kept the wedding personal and fun.

What was your favorite memory of the day?

DREA: It’s tough to say what my favorite memory of the day was. It was like being in a dream.  We felt completely surrounded by the people we love most in the world and I felt so happy and at peace that I have this incredible guy who will be on my team for the rest of my life. The wedding coordinator we had for the day said that she was surprised and maybe even a little worried about how calm I was as I was sitting having my hair and makeup done and waiting for everything to start. It’s hard to explain how I felt in that moment – how completely at peace I felt – and it’s lasted the 3 weeks since then.

One decision we made that I felt was a good one – we had 2 of our favorite and funniest friends MC the night, instead of having a DJ.  Their performance was completely memorable because they know us so well.  And many of the moments in their performance, including an interpretive dance they did to the main titles of “Six Feet Under” (long story) had me laughing so hard I was crying.

JOHN: There’s a scene from the TV show Chuck, where Chuck’s sister obsesses over twinkle lights at her brother’s engagement party, insisting it has to be “magical.” I don’t have any one favorite memory of the evening – although the interpretive dance to Six Feet Under was pretty special – but several times during the evening – once during the ceremony and a few times during the reception – I remember looking out at everyone and thinking that we were having exactly the wedding we wanted, with exactly the people we wanted with us. Which was, in fact, pretty magical.

If you could do it all over again is there anything you would have done differently?

DREA:I can honestly say that I don’t think either of us would have done anything differently.

JOHN: Me neither.

Do you have any tips or suggestions to help brides while planning a wedding? And/or tips on how to save money on a wedding?

DREA: I work in television and so planning events feels very similar to pre-production on a shoot, so it’s not an uncomfortable place for me. But I think for most people who don’t plan and make lists, I would recommend getting started as early as you can and just taking one thing at a time. I looked at a lot of photos online, which was helpful since we did all of our own decor and lighting. I shopped quite a bit in downtown LA for fabrics, our rings, flowers – everything was cheaper there but you had to roll up your sleeves and dig for it AND be willing to bargain! We liked the DIY, rustic look so really went for it with our signage and the whole look of the wedding.

I highly recommend carrying around an iPad or photos in a binder so that you can talk to the vendors and tell them exactly the look you’re going for – or if you have a number of inspirations, to ask for their advice.

JOHN: On a DIY wedding like ours, have a good sense of what you are able to do yourselves and what you’ll need professional help doing. We knew we wanted a lot of lights, and while we were able to string them, we did hire someone to run power to the back of our yard and put in poles that supported cables to which the light strings attached. The same person actually built our arbor, but I designed and built the system for putting up the curtains quickly.

Guys, think of this as an excuse to use power tools.

Thank you Andrea and John for sharing your amazing wedding with us!

Featured Bride – Debra B.

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

I am so excited to feature Debra B. from Seattle! Not only did she make such a beautiful bride but she’s also a friend of mine. She was kind enough to share her favorite moments and photos from her big day with us.

Where did you and your husband meet and how did you know he was the one?

We met on match.com. I knew he was “the one” after a few months of dating. It was once I realized how honest, loving, and trustworthy he was that it really started to become clear. Those traits won me over, and I quickly started to fall for him even more.

Where and when were you married?
We were married July 30, 2010 in Sekiu, WA – on a private beach on the Olympic Peninusla.

What was your favorite memory of the day?

Having so many of our close friends and family in one spot, enjoying a special day and special place together.

If you could do it all over again is there anything you would have done differently?
That’s a good question! I probably would have hired a crew to do the clean-up the next day!

Do you have any tips or suggestions to help brides while planning a wedding?
To save money – DEFINITELY shop for key items on BravoBride and Craigslist. Also, if you can’t find what you absolutely must have on either of these sites, buy what you need new, factoring in the fact that you can make back some of your investment by re-selling them later on BravoBride! We saved so much money by doing both of these things! For example, instead of renting linens, we bought them, which cost the same as renting (roughly $11 per tablecloth), and we were able to sell them after the wedding, collecting half of the money back – which we could have never done had we rented them.

Debra was a true DIY bride and did almost every little detail herself. Her stunning photos are by Dana Pleasant Photography. Dana is shooting Debra’s maternity photos next month too! Thanks again Debra for sharing your beautiful day with us!

Featured Bride – Melissa P.

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Our featured bride is Melissa from Louisville, Kentucky. She bought and sold a lot of her wedding items on BravoBride and she shares her wedding with us below. Be sure to check out her beautiful photos- her photographer was amazing!

This picture is so beautiful I even want to hang it on my wall!

When you were searching for a wedding dress, what style were you looking for?

After looking at tons of websites and through magazines I was so overwhelmed, I knew I needed to try some on. I didn’t want anything trendy that would cause me to look back in 10 or 20 or 30 years and say, “yuck! that is so 2000′s!”. I wanted to go for a look that was more simple, yet gave a classy, slightly vintage vibe. I couldn’t find anything in bridal magazines that jumped out at me, so I decided to just go out and look locally. I knew I definitely wanted a dress with wide cap style straps, which is next to impossible to find many dresses out there today. I didn’t want to be one of those brides tugging on her strapless dress the whole time. I ended up purchasing a size 10 strapless dress off the rack. It looked like a potato sack, but I knew once it fit my frame, it would give me the look I wanted.

I purchased my wedding veil from BravoBride. I knew I wanted the veil to look like it had walked straight out of a cathedral in Spain. The La Sposa veil was originally a cathedral length veil with a blusher. I paid $175 from a girl who’s wedding was delayed and she was unsure if she still wanted this style. I got a few extra pictures close up of the lace edge and ran on a lot of hope that it would match well with my dress; color, lace and beading. I ended up having my seamstress remove the blusher and the veil looked perfect! It really pulled together everything to give me the look I wanted. So many people complimented me on the veil for it’s regal look.

Melissa was married in a Catholic church that happened to have the longest aisle in Louisville. She knew this veil would give her "wow" factor she was going for.

Would you recommend buying a used wedding dress to other brides?

I definitely think buying used wedding gowns is such a smart idea. I was constantly on BravoBride looking for items that I could buy gently used from others. Why not?! It’s crazy to spend thousands on a dress you only wear for 8 hours. Pay 1/2 price or at least less than retail. I bought items for our reception including the cake knife and server, toasting flutes, bird cage for cards, and more. I also sold lots of items from my wedding that I knew I no longer needed since it was all done.

The La Sposa veil was a perfect fit for Melissa's gorgeous gown.

Where and when was your wedding held?

St. Agnes Catholic Church in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday, September 17, 2010.

St. Agnes Catholic Church in Louisville, Kentucky.

Where you a DIY bride?

I did make tons of crafts for my wedding (all the programs, all the table numbers, chair signs for the wedding party,  place cards for all guests, favor boxes, custom bottled waters, ‘yipee’ and ‘yay’ flags, menus at every seat, kids goodie bags and activity books, drink menus in the bar, etc).

I even lovingly designed my custom logo that shined on the wall behind the dance floor and made coffee filter pomanders to decorate the room. I was certainly busy for the year before!

The couple's first dance with Melissa's custom logo in the background.

Melissa's favorite find was a Barbie and Ken wedding ornament set that she used as a cake topper. She plans to hang it on their Christmas tree every year to remind them of their wedding day.

Thank you so much Melissa for sharing your big day with us! It’s obvious how much time and love you put into planning your wedding; it turned out beautifully!

A Paper Bouquet

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

I just came across these paper bouquets on Facebook and absolutely love them! Amber from Enchanted Bouquets Paper Wedding Flowers started her business after her wedding when she was discouraged by the lack of bouquet options and wanted something other than fresh flowers. They are hand made from various paper items such as cardstock, playing cards, vintage postcards, maps, travel brochures and more. The flowers are cut, assembled and shaped by hand so no two are the same. Her bouquet’s are a work of art that will last forever! Just feast your eyes on some of her beautiful work below and check out her Facebook page for even more.

This is a 'Green' bouquet which uses recycled paper to create the blooms and vintage embellishments to accent it.

Amber uses vintage embellishments in all of her bouquets. Each one of their bouquets has that "something old" to fulfill that age old requirement.

This bouquet looks so realistic, it's hard to believe the flowers are paper!

These toparies would make perfect centerpieces and you could use them again after your wedding as a decoration.

Amber even makes fun and funky boutonnieres for the groomsmen. Love them!
