101 Uses for My Ex-Wife’s Wedding Dress

Win a Copy of the Book!

At BravoBride we love when brides are able to re-use their wedding dress by selling it to another bride. So when Kevin Cotter, contacted me to review his book, 101 Uses for My Ex-Wife’s Wedding Dress, and give a few away to our users, I was thrilled. Kevin’s wife left him and her wedding dress and when he asked her what he was supposed to do with it, she told him ‘Whatever the $%@*! he wanted.’ And that’s just what he did. Kevin started his dress journey on his blog that became widly popular and it’s been featured on the Today Show, Inside Edition, The Huffington Post and Glamour, just to name a few. The book is funny, entertaining and a great read for anyone, no matter if they’re going through a divorce or just getting married. Kevin found a positive way to make a very bad experience better and all with a little humor. I honestly could not put this book down when I started it.

So if you’d like to get your own copy for FREE, here’s all you need to do.

Just ‘like’ our BravoBride Facebook page and write on our Facebook wall (not on this blog post) ‘Enter me in the @BravoBride 101 Uses for my Ex-Wife’s Wedding Dress contest.’ That’s it! This would make an excellent gift for the holidays too! Two BravoBride fans will win a copy, contest ends on Sunday, October 30th, 2011.

And if you don’t win a copy, here’s where you can buy it. Take a look at some of my favorite uses Kevin found for his ex-wife’s wedding dress.

Dress Use #42: Smart Car Cover

Dress Use #37: Sleeping Bag

Dress Use #5: Scarecrow

Dress Use #68: Dog Sling

My all time favorite use was #53 the ‘Do-Rag’ but you’ll have to buy the book to check that one out. Kudos to you Kevin and I know your book is going to bring laughter to a lot of people!

Featured Bride – Donna K.

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

This week our featured bride is Donna K. from Linden, NJ. She made such a beautiful bride – can you believe she did her own hair!? It looks fabulous! Donna was kind enough to share her story and wedding with us below.

Donna and her new hubby!

When you were shopping for a dress, what were you looking for in style?

A timeless, elegant, inexpensive wedding dress that would not be heavy or hot for my August wedding.

Walking down the aisle.

Why did you decide to sell your wedding dress?

The color of the first wedding dress I ordered was “candlelight.” Once it arrived at the bridal shop I was not really happy with it, but realized I did not have much time to order another dress. I got it altered and at my last fitting decided that I was not comfortable wearing it and wanted a white dress. I was able to rush order the same wedding dress in white and wear that one. BravoBride.com was the perfect place to try to sell my never worn “candlelight” wedding dress. I was really hoping that someone would be able to wear the candlelight wedding dress. It looked sad sitting in the closet.

Donna's wedding dress looked amazing on her.

Where and when did you get married?

My husband and I got married August 8, 2007 at McLoone’s Pier House, which overlooks the beach in Long Branch, New Jersey.

McLoone's Pier House.

Would you recommend selling a used wedding dress to other brides?

I absolutely recommend selling a used wedding gown. I am sure many women, like myself, are so excited to marry their husbands that being able to get married is more important than getting into debt just to tie the knot. I was ecstatic when I sold my dress. What warmed my heart even more is that I got a picture of the new owner wearing the dress on her wedding day and learned how much she loved it!

The ceremony overlooked the ocean.

What was your favorite part of your day?

My favorite part of the day was walking down the aisle with my new husband after our wedding ceremony and dancing to our wedding song. This was the first time I really got to spend with him in two days!

The flower in Donna's hair was the perfect accessory.

Thank you Donna for sharing your lovely wedding with us and for finding a way to let another bride enjoy your gown too!

Featured Brides – Tessa & Jackie

Friday, April 8th, 2011

This week’s featured bride is Tessa from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. What we love about Tessa’s story is that she became friends with Jackie, the other bride she sold her dress to on BravoBride! Read below to find out more about Tessa’s big day and check out the photos from both bride’s weddings.

When you were shopping for a dress, what were you looking for in style?

I wasn’t sure what I was looking for when I first started shopping. I was never one of those brides that already had their big day planned out before an actual engagement. I had never tried on a wedding dress so I started from square one. I quickly learned that beading and sparkles were not for me. I wanted subtle elegance that would last throughout time. I also didn’t want a dress with too much volume due to my small frame. I eventually found this dress and loved the details, although I needed a few alterations to make it the perfect dress.

Why did you decide to sell your wedding dress?

As I was downstairs doing laundry I saw my dress hanging and realized I really needed to do something before it started aging. After checking into the prices for preservation, I realized I could make $200, not spend it if I sold the dress. I also felt good about passing on the good karma I felt the dress brought me. My wedding day was amazing and the dress was a large part of that. I had the pictures to remind me how great the dress was so it wasn’t sad to sell it at all.

Would you recommend selling a used wedding dress to other brides?

Yes! I never saw the point to pay to preserve a dress you can never touch again. The bridal business has an obsene markup and there is no exception for dresses. To spend that much money for something that is used only for one day seems crazy. By selling on BravoBride you can recoup some of that money and maybe even develop a relationship with another bride.

Where and when did you get married?

August 15th, 2009 in Sioux Falls South Dakota.  The ceremony was held at our church – First Reformed Church and the reception was a CJ Callaways.

wedding transportation
What was your favorite part of your day?

My favorite part of the day was driving around in the limo after the ceremony, knowing I just had married the love of my life and knowing that the fun was to be had at the reception. We also had our parents and the entire bridal party in the limo with us so I felt like I was surrounded by so much love.

The wedding dress story continues. We love how Tessa became friends with Jackie and here’s how it all happened…

When I sold my dress on BravoBride, I had emailed the potential buyer several times. These emails got more lengthy and before I knew it we were exchanging update emails weekly. I got to be involved in planning her wedding (which was 1 year and 2 days after mine, August 17th, 2010). We added each other on Facebook and still keep in contact today. We joke that our dress is like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, only in a wedding dress form. Hopefully some day I’ll get to meet Jackie, who shared my wedding dress and became a great friend.

Jackie’s gorgeous wedding photo’s are below. Even through their weddings were so different the dress worked perfectly for both of them!

Featured Bride – Molly C.

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Our featured bride is Molly C. from Minneapolis. Molly sold her gown and other wedding items on BravoBride and she shares her big day with us below!

The beautiful bride and groom

When you were shopping for a dress, what were you looking for in style?
I wanted something unique and classy and I liked the antique look. I initially wanted something with straps or halter style.

The happy couple on a gorgeous fall day

How did you finally decide on your wedding dress?
I put it on and didn’t want to take it off!! It was so fun to wear and made me feel beautiful. I loved the sparkle and the detail.

The first dance

Would you recommend selling a used wedding dress to other brides?
I highly recommend selling and purchasing used wedding dresses. Had I known about this resource, I would have done more shopping online! I love knowing that someone out there is wearing my dress and feeling amazing in just as I did. I had so much fun in it that I can’t imagine storing it for years and years only to have no one else benefit from the dress. I did not want to find storage space for it and to feel the need to have my daughterwear it (with my luck I will have all boys!). I am very eco-friendly and am glad it is getting reused. That dress should be worn for far more than one day!

Molly's fun loving bridal party

Where and when did you get married?
I got married in Saint Paul, Minnesota at my childhood church, St. Patrick’s with the reception at the Minnesota Science Museum. We celebrated on October 25, 2008.

St. Patrick's church

What was your favorite part of your day?
I remember sitting at dinner, turning to my husband in awe at all the people in the crowd. It was amazing to have that many people there to celebrate and support us! I wish it would have lasted longer! We have such wonderful friends and family.

The wedding party in the photobooth

The photobooth was by far a highlight of many of our guests! We had goofy costumes and the photos got more interesting as the night progressed! We received 2 print outs for each set of pictures, one went into the guest book/scrapbook for us to keep (and the guests wrote messages next to their photo) and the guests kept the other copy as their “favor” from the night. It worked out perfect!

Thank you Molly for allowing us to see highlights of your big day. Your wedding looked amazing wedding and a lot of fun too!

Featured Bride – Melissa P.

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Our featured bride is Melissa from Louisville, Kentucky. She bought and sold a lot of her wedding items on BravoBride and she shares her wedding with us below. Be sure to check out her beautiful photos- her photographer was amazing!

This picture is so beautiful I even want to hang it on my wall!

When you were searching for a wedding dress, what style were you looking for?

After looking at tons of websites and through magazines I was so overwhelmed, I knew I needed to try some on. I didn’t want anything trendy that would cause me to look back in 10 or 20 or 30 years and say, “yuck! that is so 2000′s!”. I wanted to go for a look that was more simple, yet gave a classy, slightly vintage vibe. I couldn’t find anything in bridal magazines that jumped out at me, so I decided to just go out and look locally. I knew I definitely wanted a dress with wide cap style straps, which is next to impossible to find many dresses out there today. I didn’t want to be one of those brides tugging on her strapless dress the whole time. I ended up purchasing a size 10 strapless dress off the rack. It looked like a potato sack, but I knew once it fit my frame, it would give me the look I wanted.

I purchased my wedding veil from BravoBride. I knew I wanted the veil to look like it had walked straight out of a cathedral in Spain. The La Sposa veil was originally a cathedral length veil with a blusher. I paid $175 from a girl who’s wedding was delayed and she was unsure if she still wanted this style. I got a few extra pictures close up of the lace edge and ran on a lot of hope that it would match well with my dress; color, lace and beading. I ended up having my seamstress remove the blusher and the veil looked perfect! It really pulled together everything to give me the look I wanted. So many people complimented me on the veil for it’s regal look.

Melissa was married in a Catholic church that happened to have the longest aisle in Louisville. She knew this veil would give her "wow" factor she was going for.

Would you recommend buying a used wedding dress to other brides?

I definitely think buying used wedding gowns is such a smart idea. I was constantly on BravoBride looking for items that I could buy gently used from others. Why not?! It’s crazy to spend thousands on a dress you only wear for 8 hours. Pay 1/2 price or at least less than retail. I bought items for our reception including the cake knife and server, toasting flutes, bird cage for cards, and more. I also sold lots of items from my wedding that I knew I no longer needed since it was all done.

The La Sposa veil was a perfect fit for Melissa's gorgeous gown.

Where and when was your wedding held?

St. Agnes Catholic Church in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday, September 17, 2010.

Where you a DIY bride?

I did make tons of crafts for my wedding (all the programs, all the table numbers, chair signs for the wedding party,  place cards for all guests, favor boxes, custom bottled waters, ‘yipee’ and ‘yay’ flags, menus at every seat, kids goodie bags and activity books, drink menus in the bar, etc).

I even lovingly designed my custom logo that shined on the wall behind the dance floor and made coffee filter pomanders to decorate the room. I was certainly busy for the year before!

The couple's first dance with Melissa's custom logo in the background.

Melissa's favorite find was a Barbie and Ken wedding ornament set that she used as a cake topper. She plans to hang it on their Christmas tree every year to remind them of their wedding day.

Thank you so much Melissa for sharing your big day with us! It’s obvious how much time and love you put into planning your wedding; it turned out beautifully!
