The Gabi Chronicles

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

I am so excited to officially introduce you to our newest blogger, bride-to-be Gabi G., from Minnesota. Actually Gabi has been working with BravoBride for well over a year but now she’s the bride! Gabi will be chronicling her wedding planning for us, so stay tuned for all the trials and triumphs that lead to her big day!

For over a year, I have interned with BravoBride as a marketing associate and have seen amazing offers and ideas roll in and out of this website in efforts to inspire brides all over the world. Now, I am planning my own wedding and have been asked to share my experience of planning on a budget with the BravoBride community. It is a great opportunity to, not only share ideas, but to also gain insights from other brides from all over the world. I would like to start off by letting you get to know my fiancé and I a little better.

How Jack and I Met:

Jack (my fiancé) and I met in 2008 while attending the University of Minnesota. We worked together, which meant we spent a lot of time together. For two years, Jack and I built an incredible friendship; a friendship that eventually turned into the foundation of our relationship. He is, by far, the most amazing person I have ever met and I am so lucky to be able to spend the rest of my life with him.

The Proposal:

Jack and I had only been dating several months before he popped the question. On a beautiful September day in 2010, he took me on a date to the rose gardens in Minneapolis. At this point, I was only a week away from moving to Seattle, WA to live with my sister and we were trying to spend as much time together as possible. He had been particularly “lovely-dovey” all day and I didn’t think too much of it since he had been acting that way for some time. After taking pictures by all the beautiful fountains and flowers, we started to walk up a near-by hill. I noticed that Jack started breathing heavier when we started up the hill and all I could think was, “He can’t be that out of shape….”.

Once we got to the top of the hill I started to suggested places to sit or areas to go, but with every suggestion he said no. I was a bit confused until finally he asked if he could take my picture. He had me go down the hill a ways so that he could- supposedly- get the rose gardens in the background (where in actuality he was getting the ring ready in his pocket). When I came back to him, we embraced and I could feel him shaking. The next thing I knew, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him. I was totally shocked but absolutely thrilled. Of course I said yes and we went on to call everyone we knew.

I left for Seattle that next week and for the following year, Jack and I carried on a long distance engagement. Although difficult, it only strengthened our relationship. Now I am back in Minnesota and am diving head first into wedding planning. Both Jack and I hope that you enjoy our future posts through BravoBride and encourage you to share your ideas and experiences along the way! Be sure to catch our first official post about what we plan to do for catering on our big day. Thanks for reading and until next time, have a great week!

Featured Bride – Donna K.

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

This week our featured bride is Donna K. from Linden, NJ. She made such a beautiful bride – can you believe she did her own hair!? It looks fabulous! Donna was kind enough to share her story and wedding with us below.

Donna and her new hubby!

When you were shopping for a dress, what were you looking for in style?

A timeless, elegant, inexpensive wedding dress that would not be heavy or hot for my August wedding.

Walking down the aisle.

Why did you decide to sell your wedding dress?

The color of the first wedding dress I ordered was “candlelight.” Once it arrived at the bridal shop I was not really happy with it, but realized I did not have much time to order another dress. I got it altered and at my last fitting decided that I was not comfortable wearing it and wanted a white dress. I was able to rush order the same wedding dress in white and wear that one. BravoBride.com was the perfect place to try to sell my never worn “candlelight” wedding dress. I was really hoping that someone would be able to wear the candlelight wedding dress. It looked sad sitting in the closet.

Donna's wedding dress looked amazing on her.

Where and when did you get married?

My husband and I got married August 8, 2007 at McLoone’s Pier House, which overlooks the beach in Long Branch, New Jersey.

Would you recommend selling a used wedding dress to other brides?

I absolutely recommend selling a used wedding gown. I am sure many women, like myself, are so excited to marry their husbands that being able to get married is more important than getting into debt just to tie the knot. I was ecstatic when I sold my dress. What warmed my heart even more is that I got a picture of the new owner wearing the dress on her wedding day and learned how much she loved it!

The ceremony overlooked the ocean.

What was your favorite part of your day?

My favorite part of the day was walking down the aisle with my new husband after our wedding ceremony and dancing to our wedding song. This was the first time I really got to spend with him in two days!

The flower in Donna's hair was the perfect accessory.

Thank you Donna for sharing your lovely wedding with us and for finding a way to let another bride enjoy your gown too!

Saving Money, and Staying Stylish

BravoBride Features Brooklyn Bride

There are so many ways for brides-on-a-budget to save money and still have a great event. Today we chatted with Brooklyn Bride, the blog known for style and smart weddings, and looked at where to spend and where to save. We love these tips. Her ideas for the DIY Bride involve going simple and we totally agree!

How did you get started with Brooklyn Bride as a blog?

Brooklyn Bride started really as a scrapbook for ideas for my own wedding back in 2007. Back then, there weren’t the thousands of wedding blogs there are now, and none spoke to my modern aesthetic, so I started posting what I had collected over the years, thinking maybe a few people might stumble upon it for their own ideas. Over the months, the blog just grew and grew!

What is the one thing brides think they need on their wedding day that it turns out wasn’t as important?

I think people overestimate the necessity of favors…your friends and family are there to celebrate you! Favors like candles holders or tiny frames are completely useless, and will most often just be left on the table. If you absolutely MUST get a favor for your guests, go with something edible, like chocolates, or something they can take away from the wedding, for example, a fun picture from the photo booth.

When a bride is on a strict budget, what is the first area that you try to save on?

It really depends on the bride and what’s important to her. For me photography was incredibly important to me because it was really the one thing would have to remember the day by, so I splurged there. Stationery as well was really important because I’m a paper fanatic! But accessories like shoes, jewelry, even a limo at the end of the night, were just not priorities, so I saved a ton there by using stuff I already had and taking a cab home :) If there’s anything a friend can make or help you with, those are always big money (and time savers).

Thanks again to Vané for her helpful tips and ideas! Next week were are going to feature a DIY wedding project on how to make your own cookie favors. Such an easy way to make your wedding even sweeter!

Sad News for Brides Everywhere

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

InStyle Weddings canceledTime Inc. has announced they will be closing InStyle Weddings magazine. The last issue of the quarterly publication will hit news stands on Dec. 25 and will remain on sale until March 5.

The main reason for the magazine to be cancelled is the down economy. InStyle Weddings will now be another magazine added to the list of cancelled wedding magazines. Conde Nast closed Modern Bride and Elegant Bride less than a month ago in October. What a bummer! This was one of my favorite’s to read when I was getting married.
